At night, you may want to avoid travelling up to Bairro Alto alone...I know of a few people who were mugged as they walked up the dark hill to access it from the Praca Dos Restauradores...you should take the yellow and white street car up the hill instead...

We wanted to go up to Bairro Alto the other night and decided to go up the long way, through Baixa, up the hill to Chiado (near the Eiffel lookout tower, up to the mall) and then up again to the top of the hill and then back up again towards Bairro Alto. It was a very long way but there was lots of street lights and people around.

On another night we used the stairs to go up from Baixa (behind the train station). It was physically demanding but lots of lights. I still do not believe you should go up or down these stairs alone or intoxicated...
