Paquime

Visit the museum at the UNESCO Human Heritage site of Paquime (formerly known as Casas Grandes). It is a gorgeous building with very well done exhibits. The gift shop has equisite native crafts in it and the only thing that save me and my VISA card was that the shop was closed when I was there on New Years Day. There is a great deal of influence from the prehistoric Indian groups to the north - namely Hohokom, Mogollon and Pueblo. Much of the site has been excavated by the Amerind Foundation under Charles di Peso but several large unexcavated mounds still exist. There has been significant restoration done to the ruins as the materials the orginal building were built of have weathered over time.

Paquime Ruins

The ruins include multi-storied apartment and storage buildings, roasting pits, ceremonial areas, canals and waterworks, ballcourts and interesting features such as the "Serpent House". The entire area is exposed and it can be very cold and windy in the winter and I image windy all year round - be sure to dress appropriately.
