I love Malta.
Its so full of history, from ancient prehistoric sites, through the fascinating Knights of St John, the heroic battle of WWII, and now to its most peaceful time as Europe rests for a while.
Go there for the sun and the fun, but make sure you take in all the mystery and drama of its past.
Oh and make sure you hear the locals speaking maltese - I swear it sounds like Kingon. |
| | Potted History Man arrived before 3500 bc - even before the Egyptians built the pyramids. He was a builder and some of the oldest surviving buildings in the world are in Malta.
All quiet for thousands of years, then overrun in quick succession by the Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthage and Rome.
St Paul arrived and lived in a cave for a while 60 AD.
Overrun by Byzantium, Vandals, Goths, Arabs, and the Normans took over in the eleventh century.
After that it was a free for all and Malta seem to change hands every generation.
Finally the Knights of St John arrived in 1530 followed by the Great Siege against the Turks in 1565. The knights won.
The knights reign for couple of hundred years and Valleta becomes very very rich
French take over and Napolean looted the place.
The brits arrived in 1800 and ruled until WWII.
The Germans did their best to bomb the island into submission but they held out. The island is awarded the George cross for their bravery after the war.
