The Aland Islands

The Aland islands are positioned between eastern Sweden and southwestern Finland, the islands were originally settled by Nordic peoples, today called "Alanders"
Aland is made up of over 6,500 islands and rocky outcrops covering 572 square miles.
Today 25,000 inhabitants live on only 65 of the islands. Nearly half the population live in Mariehamn, the only city in Aland.
In 1954, Aland received its own flag , and now has its own representative in the parliament of Finland.

Mariehamn

Mariehamn (Maarianhamina in Finnish) is the capital of Åland.
The town, founded in 1861, was named after Marie Alexandrovna, the Empress consort of Alexander II of Russia. Åland and Mariehamn have a reputable heritage in shipping.

We came to Aland from Turku by Viking Line, that day was Easter so almost everything was closed...we found Mariehamn in empty and so quite.
