"Kat Hing Wai - Home to the Tang Clan" Kat Hing Wai by tanga

Kat Hing Wai Travel Guide: 3 reviews and 2 photos

Welcome

Kat Hing Wai is my ancestral home and home to the Tang Clan, Hong Kong's first immigrants. The Tangs are a well-off clan with income from land ownership, therefore the majority of the three-room houses have now been demolished and replaced with modern 3 or 4 storey buildings. (Obviously as these are homes, not a museum!) If you want to have a glimpse of old villages, Sam Tuk Uk Museum is better and the Hong Kong Museum of History also provides you with insights in Hong Kong traditions and village traditions. Its good to visit if you are in the New Terrorities anyway, but I would not suggest making a special trip to the village as you will be disappointed.

Tang Festival

The Tangs hold a religious festival every ten years. The last one was in November 2005 and so the next will be Nov 2015. As the Tang Clans live in various villages across Kam Tin, this festival brings the Tangs together. There is a communal/clan fund which pays for these festivities and meals are on a ticket basis. Although tourists are not invited to eat from the basin dishes, they are however welcome to watch the lion and dragon dancing. I will be providing a map of the festival site nearer 2015 for anyone who wishes to visit.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:The walls surrounding the village (the only place you will see this is here)
  • Cons:Thoroughly modernised village, not really a tourist attraction
  • In a nutshell:Many people leave thinking wat it really worth the visit??
