Maramures | an orthodox church in Poienile d'Izei |
In northern Romania, in the region called Maramures, there are not only savage and marvellous moutains, but also many a few hundred years old, wooden orthodox churches and cementaries. This region is famous for its so called "wooden tradition and culture". There, you can still see whole villages built of wood in the traditional style, and people in traditional clothes. |
| | This cementary is located just next to the oldest orthodox church in the region ( I don't remember exactly which century, 14th or 15th). The quietude around, the location on a hill, and the ambience inside the church makes it a sacred place. |

kokoryko Tue Nov 11, 2008 20:29 UTC Central Europe has still some hidden gems. . . . I often think of visiting places like this before they get too “westernised”. I like a lot your travelogues with pictures of people. Nice to discover Romania with you, Marzena. | calcaf38 Sun Feb 24, 2008 12:58 UTC Interesting tips.
