Castel Gandolfo Travel Guide: 35 reviews and 59 photos
Castel Gandolfo is one of a few small towns outside Roma known as "Castelli Romani" and very famous for their wines. Epicentre of this wine route is Lake Albano, which some of these towns overlook to create magnifique views.
Castel Gandolo itself became less famous for the wines than for being the Pope's official residence, in the fantasic Papel Palace on the main square, where some summer audiences occur. People (friendly) there say that one nice experience is to watch the Pope's arrival to Catel Gandolfo, when he uses the residence's main entry.
What concerns architectural big.."attractions", the famous Papal Palace - with its "osservatorio" tower, overlooking the Lake - is first and last on the list.
The beauty of the town, though, is its unique silence and top-of-the-hill atmosphere, the civilized visitors (@ least when I was there), the magnifique views to the Lake, just beneath, either from viewpoints or when you see the water through the walls of a narrow street..
Castel Gandolfo is a very nice town to spend a fresh day-out, get to know where the Pope (a great symbol of peace, more than anything) spends his days other than in Rome, and sit for a nice capuccino. (see "Restaurant" tips for a nice "caffe"!)
I'd reccomend it as part of a journey visit to the whole Castelli Romani area, which I will try to cover for you here on VT (maybe when you read this I already did).
