If you want to get away from the pot smoking or alcohol swinging crowd then the Shelter is a nice peaceful haven, one of several Christian hostels in Amsterdam, nice ethics but no religious affiliations are enforced but provides a clean and well run hostel. Single sex dorms from 4 beds to large 20 bed dorms surrounding a lovely garden courtyard with fountain. Good system of security with front door locked and 1am curfew, lockers provided in each room/dorm. Breakfast included, if early breakfast required before their 8am start a packed one can be arranged. Reasonable rates, actually cheaper than most others, and nights are cheaper after the first night of stay. Luggage can be left in the lock up area during the day which is very helpful for pm flights or departures. Meals and snacks, hot and cold drinks can be provided until late at night, so want to come back and put your feet up for a midnight tea with go for it!! 21 euro in a large dorm room, 25 euro in a 4 bed dorm
Unique Qualities: Good value for the increasing expense that staying in Amsterdam, outside of package deals, seems to now incur for single or budget travellers.

balhannah Sun Jul 5, 2009 22:45 UTC Checking what I missed out on. My Hotel was a short walk from the Brewery. Lucky you having nice, calm morning for those lovely canal shots! Was hoping for that, breeze, then wind put and end to that. | Nemorino Sun Nov 9, 2008 20:14 UTC I enjoyed reading your interesting and enthusiastic tips on Amsterdam. Yes, "even the parked bicycles can be photogenic!" I wonder who those 2 million Dutch people are who don't have bicycles -- out of 16,570,613 in the country, so that makes 12%. | LoriPori Mon Aug 25, 2008 14:15 UTC Awesome page on Amsterdam, esp the information on the Flower Auction in Aalsmeer & Flower Market in Amsterdam. Also thanks for visiting my Aruba page. | mazzap Fri Apr 18, 2008 22:45 UTC Just had a very nice virtual tour of Amsterdam through your tips Angie! Brought back great memories of my trip there, those flowers and canals, the museums, bikes......so much going on in a small place! Thanks, Marion xx |
