I still live and love here! | wonders of walking around London- the Thames |
I first visited London in 1999 doing the touristy thing with my Mum, i was very sick though so i wasnt the full quid going about to see all the sights as madly as i would usually but i managed to drag myself around the Tower of London and up the White Tower etc etc, open top buses etc and it was rather great. but we ran out of time to see much of Europe so i took advantage of my great and wanted vocation and came back in 2000 to work and live here for a while. Thats since been over extended and i am missing the Southern hemisphere! the first few years i spent a lot of time and enthusiasm seeing streets and sights and events and buildings around London, took stacks of photos - all SLR- until the past year or so, i walked for miles all over as i lived and worked not far from the city centre, and then when moved a bit further out i went through a cycling everywhere phase with friends bikes, and really made the most of being in London!
This opening pic is one of the many beautiful scenes I've been blessed to see from my meanderings around the city - this particularly is one of the many beautiful looks one can get of the Thames one morning near my workplace. The first three years of living in London I worked or ran to and from work - tell you not just great for fitness but an excellent way to see the beauty around you and that includes here in London - so you tourists....Id strongly recommend lots of walking! |
| 2 of Londons many dramatic tributes to its heroes! |
| | Interesting sights and history With a little time in London you will get to see theres a prolific number of statues to be found all over the city centre giving tribute to war heroes and significant leaders in history, including Royals and certainly a few ive never heard of!
One of my frequently visited arrival and departure points of the city centre is Trafalgar Square as theres a direct bus to and from there to my residence. Trafalgar Square is of course named after the Battle of Trafalgar in which Lord Horatio Nelson won the Battle of Trafalgar off the coast of Gibraltar against that determined little battler Napoleon Bonaparte - but unfortunately sustaining a fatal wound and dying.
Its a great square and centre with loads happening - the dramatic statues and fountain and surrounding buildings of several Emnbassies and of the National Art Gallery and wedding cake spired church St Martins-in-the-Fields (which was our starting point for our 3 day charity walk to Canterbury!) with its historic Brass Rubbings and Cafe-in-the-Crypt. There are often events and festivals held here, the mall with its pomp and parades down to Buckingham Palace comes off this Square, in another direction takes you down to Big Ben and Westminster Palace and Parliament, another direction to the Embankment and bustling Covent Garden or the short road north up to busy Leceister Square and Picadilly Circus!! |
Olde Englande and lovely architecture! | | | Ben looking very Big - and beautiful! |

| Pros: | "The number of beautiful parks all over the place is amazing, flowers thru the seasons, prolifically stunning architecture all over the place over a wide range of artistic periods, excellent museums,so much history and olde england, the royals!" | | Cons: | "the public transport system is overpriced and undercleaned ! - the public buses are almost filthy!, people in the city have a tendency to act as if rapport and contact with fellow human beings is for wierdos only!" | | In A Nutshell: | "plenty of photogenic scenes here - parks, buildings - quaint olde england to huge and very impressive contemporary architecture, great art exhibitions and museums!" |
