Bridal gift town from the kings to their queens

by angiebabe - last update: Nov 1, 2006

Picture book town

Looking over Obidos
White washed house with blue and yellow borders, cobbled streets and alleys and striking bouganvillea - all surrounded by medieval walls and ramparts to climb and gaze over lovely green plain and rural landscape.

Here you will also find the church Igreja de Santa Maria with interior lined with blue seventeenth century azulejos and containing work by Josefa de Obidos, whol lived for many years in a convent in Obidos and regarded as one of the finest of Portugal's painters and one of the few women given any reputation by art historians.
castle of Obidos

Impressive walled town with its Castelo

Make your way through the tourist and souvenir thronged but still medieval streets up the hill to the castle - you will find steps that take you to the top of the walls and ramparts with excellent view to the castle and streets and below.
The castle has been converted into a pousada ie one of the government-run hotels which make use of historic buildings.

Views to lovely rural countryside

500 years ago the fertile green plain was once the harbour and boats were moored below the walls of Obidos!!

Pros:"Picture book scenes!! still the medieval look with its cobbles and old buildings, plus the opportunity to get up high onto the walls for excellent views of the quaintness below."
Cons:"i was here in October and the number of tourists occasionally got in the way of my lens but October is nowhere as bad as busloads of tourists arrive and fill the streets to jammed capacity!!Prices for souvenirs are over priced."

Glad that Hans and I had the opportunity to visit this very lovely Portuguese town, thanks to the Vt Group tour.

This excellent page brought back great memories of Óbidos! I too loved those castle walls and the view they gave over the town. Unfortunately, we had a date with the nearby Ilhas de Berlenga so did not have enough time to spare for this beautiful spot.

Obidos seems an interesting place to visit. Your photos say so. I have been to Madeira Island and it was great. You are welcome to my new albums. Where did you go after all for Easter holiday?

Beautiful page. So, I'm not the only person who saw gray skies in Portugal! But you make me want to go back and visit Óbidos: good photos and smart text. Thank you for dropping by my Peru page. Best Wishes.
