These days a museum with mix of local archeology, natural history and craft displays and special exhibitions it is still possible to see the old cells and solitary confinement pens of the sixteenth century fortress which also served as a jail for political prisoners of the dictator Salazar through the 1950s and 60s.
Open Tues to Sunday till 6pm, closes at 5pm in winter.

just a few minutes north of peniche are some rather stunning views around the rugged coastline. and were there are some popular spots for fishing. check out even the spot created for wheelchairs to fish from the top of the cliff!

The Cabo lighthouse

Cabo (cape) Cavoeiro is only 45 minutes walk from Peniche - or 5-10 minutes drive! but it took a while even with the car as i needed a number of stops along the route to get the photos and views i came across!!
The light house area provided an official stopping and viewing area with good views over the nearby island of Berlenga, a coffee shop and decent public toilets.
There are some interesting rock formations along the way and the deep blue water down below crashing white against the rocks or shore made some nice shots. On further there were even some quaint small farmlets or hamlets - whatever they are called but little houses with a farmyard around it fenced off with stone walls.
half way along there were people all around the area sitting around picnicking - i guessed it was a market day but at the light house cafe there was a sign advertising a special day for Mary.

Makes a scenic walk or drive along the road from peniche to the Cape Cavoeiro and its lighthouse. There are designated spots along the way for fishing so the locals seem to utilise them. Certainly nice spots to stop and admire the view or have a picnic!
