walk the circuit of the impressive walls

Ciudad Rodrigo was a crucial border town during the Peninsular Wars but fell to the French in 1810 but taken by the British in 1812 with the Duke of Wellington at the lead.
The impressive 12th century walls, with 17th century additions, of the entire old town can be walked around with excellent views across into Portugal and over the Roman bridge below.

Streets full of preserved renaissance mansions

Roam the streets for interesting architecture, particularly numerous renaissance mansions and the 3 most impressive recommended to look for the Palacio de los Castros, the Palacio Alba de Yeltes and the Palacio de Moctezuma - which is now the towns Casa Municipal de la Cultura. Head for the main square the plaza Mayor.
Also check out the castillo - which is now one of the specially restored for the government run hotel chain of Paradors. There didnt seem to be any hesitation to let keen tourists to roam around and check out the lavishness - and use the toliet facilities!

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Cobble stoned history with impressive architecture and views from the intact high town walls, overlooking the a bit more roman remains ie the roman bridge crossing the river Agueda

You have some beautiful photos of Ciudad-Rodrigo here, especially that view of the river from the fortress walls! I like towns like this - my wife and I actually once stayed overnight in nearby Guarda, Portugal!
