I really wanted to visit the windmills written about in my frequently read Rough Guide and pictorial DK Eyewitness, Upset my itinerary as i took longer than i had planned, as was trying to get to the Thursday market at Barcelos (didnt of course! too many distractions along the way!) but great windmills - visited the ones at Campo de Criptana the previous evening - and interesting castle with excellent views in all directions.
- Pros:photogenic windmills, as romanticised by Don Quixote?, and interesting castle
- Cons:i spent too long here - and was so relaxed being up here i had to drag myself away as days were getting so much shorter being October
- In a nutshell:well worth getting the hire car in madrid and driving this way on the way up to Portugal!
