"made it to the rose festival of Kelaat Mgouna!" El Kelaa des Mgouna by angiebabe

El Kelaa des Mgouna Travel Guide: 5 reviews and 34 photos

Kelaa Mgouna is a town in the centre of a thriving rose growing and production area - and is a large town on the main road along the Dades Valley Road between Tinerhr and Boulmane.

Each year when the thousands of roses are harvested a large and popular festival is held to celebrate - usually the 1st weekend in May but it does depend on the harvest and like most festivals in Morocco dates are often not confirmd until close to the date set.

The main parade is usually on Saturday and a Rose Queen is chosen - then there is usually a few hours of entertainment with groups in their differing area's costumes taking turns to perform.

There are many shops here with a wide range of products made from roses for sale - being the centre of MOrocco's rose production it can be the best place to stock up on souvenirs and gifts to take home - creams, perfumes, soaps and gels, incense and pot pourri, even sprays to deodorise your car....but if you are not happy with the prices simply haggle!

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:lovely rose creams, soaps, water - all sorts of lovely selection - find the right shop with the best products and the best prices. very scenic valley, interesting festival with lots of photo opportunities
  • Cons:have to haggle to get prices youre happy with for all those lovely rose products - otherwise the tourist price is too expensive

Quite apart from the rose festival, isn't this a spectacular area. I was fascinated to see the Coca Cola sunshades - globalisation indeed! :))

Wow, how colourful! And then you take home souvenirs and they don't look like they looked there :-)))

Wow, looks like a colourful festival. We missed it by only a few weeks.
