Colmar with character!

A stunning Colmar refresher

prolific old buildings well beautified!
My first visit to Colmar, with population of 65,000, was with a tour group including an Australian cousin living in London on a tour to Oberammergau for the 10 yearly Passion Play.

The tour company we were with was, as my cousin preferred, travelling particularly with a religious focus so we were taken to many 'christian' religious sites on route around Europe.

Colmar was included in the tour mainly bacause of the 15th century Issenheim Altar which is highly regarded as a very moving masterpeiece of art and I do recall the explanation given to us by an english speaking guide from the museum as being quite awesome.

But i dont remember Colmar being as beautiful as it is at present!
loads of colours! - flowers and the buildings!

Stunning Old Town!

I had read an article in one of the recent weekend newspaper travel sections which i usually collect from work - and it was rather inspirational re the excellent old town so i planned to go see it again on my way to Switzerland.

And I am so glad I did! What a beautiful time of year - lush with prolific and very colourful flowers - and many lovely 'half-timbered' buildings - what an enjoyable visit.
It was rushed but a nice refresher of a visit we had made back in 2000.

Head for Little Venice!

Old towns with excellent old buildings around a canal are usually extremely picturesque so with the limited time i had i aimed for 'Little Venice' Id got from the hotel I'd stayed in.

And good planning 99! Stunning. I ended up iindulging in an hour instead of 20 minutes - I couldnt leave!ie I couldnt stop taking photos!

So i guess i can safely recommend that July is pretty close to being the most picturesque or best time of year to be in Colmar!! Lots of tourists but not too hectic and that adds atmosphere and life to a place I reckon!
see my tips for pics of Little Venice!
