People come here for the number of sites around the town with excellent mosaics. Theyre mostly in old churches with early christian mosaics.
Even the oldest mosaic in Jordan is here - or a piece of it - according to the museum at the Church of the Virgin Mary.
It was interesting to see the seemingly accepted mix of christian and muslim sites here - as far as a tourist town goes people were calm and pleasant - when I approached for help with directions or info they were helpful or people actually approached me to tell there was this or that church in that direction to go see. (all very helpful as there were actually very few signs around the place!) |

| | Excellent museum with an excellent collection of mosaics brought from other sites around the area - along with the mosaics here on the original site of the Church of the Virgin Mary (Roman catholic origins or influences versus the early church) |

| Pros: | "fascinating history here - jewish and christian history living peacefully alongside Islam" | | Cons: | "signposting and directions to the sites and the main centre when driving is a little difficult!" |

TheWanderingCamel Sun May 31, 2009 15:44 UTC Interesting litle town, Madaba. Apparently there are several private houses with mosaics still in situ, not open to visitors though. | Nemorino Sat May 30, 2009 23:07 UTC So this is where Salome danced for the head of John the Baptist! He's called Jochanaan in Oscar Wilde's play and Richard Strauss's opera. (His best opera, in my opinion -- I've seen it in several different productions.) | zumodemango Wed May 13, 2009 09:15 UTC i remember Madaba as a very nice place. your page is very interesting! | jumpingnorman Sat Apr 4, 2009 18:09 UTC I saw Pope John Paul when I was younger and my wife even touched his hand when he visited the Philippines! I am glad he also went to Jordan...wonderful place! Norman :) |
