Kos is the third largest of Greece's Dodecanese Islands. It is extremely close to Turkey, which you can easily see from the harbour of Kos Town.

We spent a week self-catering in the town of Kardamena, which is called a 'village' but is really a sprawl of hotels, bars and clubs. Kardamena is convenient for the airport and 30km west of Kos Town.

Kardamena was great as a base for exploring the nearby Greek Islands in the Dodecanese.

Nyssyros is a short distance south, with its smoking volcano.

Tilos is further south still, a tranquil and beautiful escape from the clubs and tourists.

To the north of Kos is the larger island of Kalymnos, with its busy capital town, Pothia.

Kos was great for being a tourist; good cheap restaurants and nightlife, some great beaches and, of course, lots of sun.
