Barry is a small town 7 miles west of Cardiff. It grew up around its docks. Like Cardiff, Barry Docks exported many thousands of tons of coal to the world and imported cargoes like fruit.
Barry Town itself is still quite rundown - sorry people of Barry ;-) But things may be changing. Barry is developing parts of its dock area to become a new marina. It has a pleasant library with a new art gallery. Watch this space!
Recently the town became famous as the location for the BBC's popular "Gavin & Stacey" comedy, which was partially set in Barry.
Another claim to fame for Barry is it is the closest town to Cardiff Airport.
Barry is more famous for Barry Island as a tourist destination. This is where thousands of holidaymakers came to spend their time on the sandy beaches, or at Barry Island's permanant Funfair.
If you are going to Barry, definitely head for Barry Island.
- Pros:Beaches, Barry Island, The Knap
- Cons:Run down main town ...and Barry Island is falling apart too
- In a nutshell:Best for beaches, cheap fairground rides, fish & chips

Excellent souvenirs of Barry and the nice Welsh people. I staid there in the summer of 1960 for a stage in a chemical plant (near Sully or Penarth ?). It seems Barry got all crowded since then.
Used to go to Barry as a kid - wasn't planning on returning but the beach and castle tip is great
interesting to look at the taffy skeggy
Barry Island is very interesting - from a Geological point of view. Something to do with an unconformity on the point past the beach, or something...
Neven been in summer :-) and I am sure you will not call sandy beach to peebles beach LOL. Nice to see more pages of my family in law place...
