Warnings Or Dangers: Pigeons and their plans for world domination

  • DO NOT FEED the pigeons, especially in pigeon-friendly locations like Trafalgar Square. These ugly gray birds carry disease, cover everything with their s**t and are quite capable of looking after themselves.

They are not as stupid as they look (which is hardly difficult). Pigeons follow main roads and motorways to navigate and there have been sightings of pigeons using the London Underground!! It is impossible to run-over a pigeon with a car - they are experts at avoiding death!!!

If everyone stopped throwing bread and grain at these birds, they would have to go out and earn an honest living like every other sentient being. And that can only be a good thing ;-)

Warnings Or Dangers: Officially the most polluted UK location
  • Tip Rating:
  • By far the most polluted place in the United Kingdom is the Marylebone Road in Central London. This is according to a report by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy in June 2005. There is on average 23.3 micrograms of the pollutant per cubic metre of Britain's air. However, it is 42 micrograms for Marylebone Road! Pollutant includes soot, dust, smoke and fumes (particularly diesel engines).

Considering there is no heavy industry on the Marylebone Road, these pollutants must all come from cars, lorries, buses and taxis! Fortunately London is trying to cut down on emissions from vehicles, starting with cleaner engines for London Black Cabs.

But it only goes to prove, hanging around in London is bad for your health. My advice would be to leave as soon as possible, explore the beautiful countryside of the Shires and further afield ;-)

Warnings Or Dangers: The fake St Paul's Cathedral tip

  • Did you really believe the London Tourist Board when they told you about the city's splendid cathedral, by the great architect Sir Christopher Wren?

Actually, as you can see from my photo, once you get close to St Paul's Cathedral you will see that the great walls of Portland stone are a complete mirage. When Sir Chris finally completed the 111m high 65,000 tonne dome in the 1690's he discovered to his horror that the budget has been completely exhausted. So he constructed the remainder of his grand design out of scaffolding poles, canvas and cheap black paint. So the cathedral is really a tent - minus the GAZ stove, dangerous guy ropes and dead spiders, of course.

    You have been warned...

LOCATION: temporary scaffolding covering anniversary restoration work, 2005/6 (did you really think I was telling the truth ;-)
