Restaurant Name: St Paul's "Rendezvous" Health Food Restaurant
A very unusual location for a restaurant. In a working church. No, not in a separate building attached to the church, I mean
in the church itself!
St Paul's City Centre Church was gutted and restored around around two years ago. The restaurant opened about this time, an imaginative way to keep the church in constant use and raise some money.
The kitchen and half of the tables are actually in the main body of the church, in clear view of the altar. The other half are beneath the tower, with the fluffy 'sally' of the bell rope and some nice stained glass.
The staff were extremely helpful, friendly and attentive, as you would expect, I guess. The most amusing aspect was having my order taken by a little girl who was about 8 years old. Good for the spelling and adding-up practice, no doubt.
The cafe was reasonably busy (mainly the older generation), warm, with fresh daffodils everywhere.
Open Tuesday to Saturday 10am - 4pm. But closes for funerals, weddings etc. of course :-)
Favorite Dish: Erm... weeeellll... the food. Ummmm.
It calls itself a "Vegetarian and Healthfood" restaurant. Ok, vegetarian lasagne and nut cutlets were on the menu (though they had run-out of nut cutlets). But All-day Breakfasts are not known either for sparing farm animals or being good for one's health. And I was even asked if I wanted gravy with my vegetarian lasagne :-) And when it came it was luke warm.
But they also do sandwiches, coffee and cakes. AND hot puddings with custard, yum!
AND the prices were extremely reasonable indeed. 2.50 for an 'all-day' breakfast. 3.50 for the other hot meals.
