The small seaside town of Tenby has been a tourist magnet since the late 1700's, though today the tourists are no longer rich English aristocrats, by any stretch of the imagination. The name 'Tenby' is an anglicisation of the Welsh name 'Dinbych-y-Pysgod', or 'Little Fort of the Fishes'. You can still find forts or all ages, from the Iron Age (overlooking the harbour) to the nearby Castlemartin Artillery range. There are still plenty of boats in the colourful harbour, though only a very few are used to catch pysgod. However, you will be pleased to know there are boats that provide a regular service to Caldy Island, or around the nearby coast to watch the wildlife.
All in all, Tenby can be a pleasant town when the sun is out, with plenty of history and some very expansive sandy beaches. |
