Off The Beaten Path: Casa MEU BARCO - high and dry!!
  • Tip Rating:
  • No, Almunecar was not hit by a tsunami in the late 1960's. But you would think so, if you took a walk up the Avenida Mediterraneo. Halfway along this road, between the San Cristobal Beach and the main N-road, is a full-size concrete ship!!

The 'ship' is actually a home for a retired sea captain. After thirty years at sea he retired to Almunecar and built a full-size replica of his boat to live in. As well as a front door, a garage for the car and a garden on the deck, the Casa MEU BARCO has rigging, flags, portholes, an anchor and a lifeboat!!

The Casa MEU BARCO is not on the tourist trail. Fortunately I spotted a mention of it in a copy of the "Rough Guide to Andalucia". It was a "Must Visit" for me, an architect, of course! And when I found it, I spent ten minutes walking up-and-down the road mumbling "Incredible, incredible" :-)

Address: Avenida Mediterraneo, 34 - halfway between the N-340 coast road and the far west end of the Playa de San Cristobal.

Haha - there is one surreal "boat in the dry" in Dalmatian hinterland as well - used to be a sea restaurant. And that monument is definitely shaped after a lighthouse, not a chimney ;)
