Very pleasant, historic coastal town on the north east of Tenerife. When I collected my bags at Tenerife Sur airport I noticed that 99% of my fellow tourists headed south by coach to the beach resorts, while two or three brave souls ventured north to Santa Cruz and Puerto by service bus.

The north east corner of the island gets much more cloud and rain, not enough to ever spoil your holiday, but enough for the lush parks, gardens, vines and banana plantations.

Puerto also has a very noticeable population of German tourists (and residents), they have a recent historical tradition of coming here in large numbers. But Spanish tourists also come here in large quantities. Menus and signposts seem to be firstly in Spanish, secondly in German and English in third place! But no complaints from me, a pasty white northern European, I can understand the delights of this area and its weather system!

• Cons:In danger of becoming overdeveloped. Rocky beaches.
• In a nutshell:A get-away from the loud resorts of the south!!
