Rome - essential to the European Tour

by aaaarrgh - last update: Jan 19, 2005

Teatro di Marcello
Rome was the first ever city in the world with over 1million inhabitants! It was the centre of one of the most successful civilisations (and no doubt the Italians will say that it still is *chuckle*). And the largest, from Northern Europe to Turkey and North Africa.

The Romans were superb engineers, inventors and imperialists. All around Rome you will see the remains of their success - large arches to dominate, vast stadiums to entertain, bath houses to wash, temples to worship, villas to enjoy, market places and ports to trade.

As an architecture student I could not wait to see Rome for myself. Some of the ruins were a bit disappointing, others were beyond my expectations, especially the Pantheon.

And then there is the Renaissance period of the C15th and C16th. Rome's architecture and art inspired builders, sculptors and painters across Europe and beyond.

Rome as a modern city is also beautiful. Its busy streets, long avenues and large parks give more than enough to keep a vistor happy for weeks. Unfortunately I only had one week to pack it all into :-(

And the Pope's Vatican City is an absolute MUST SEE!! St Peter's and its Square (not to foget the Sistine Chapel) are completely beyond belief!!!

In the spirit of enjoying the beauty of Rome, I took with me only a very small disposable camera, together with my sketch book, paints and pens. So unavoidably I will occasionally resort to using postcards to illustrate some of the tips. Enjoy!

Personally I think the further south of Italy you go the more intersting it gets, the food, the architecture, the dark hystory, but people don't want to venture too far south. Happy travels.
