Würzburg - a city lovingly rebuilt

by aaaarrgh - last update: Dec 28, 2005

Cathedral on busy shopping day
Not the most well-known city in Germany, but important all the same. Würzburg fills this part of the valley of the River Main. It is very much a working city, full of industry and a main shopping centre for this part of Bavaria.

Almost completely destroyed by a raging inferno during World War II(courtesey of Allied saturation bombing), the population have lovingly rebuilt the city. There is no way now that you can tell!

Cathedral, Castle, Palace, it has the set!!
Marienburg overlooking the city streets

Marienburg Fortress

Würzburg is overlooked by a wooded hill, ontop of which is the Marienburg Fortress. It is open to the public and has exhibitions of the city's history.

I have walked up the hill many times and there are great views from the top.
Grand ducal palace.

Residenz

Grand ducal palace built in the 18th century. It reminded me of Versailles. Large gardens outside. Lots of gold, mirrors and paintings, and more gold throughout the interior.
