After finish your visit to the Grand Palace and The royal temple Wat Phra Kaeo, you may take a walk to the wide area in front, its a royal ground Sanam Luang. It is a major royal ground, a place where the King performs state ceremonies, a place of central importance for the Thai people and when there 's no ceremonies its a wide area where you can see some activities such as people come in the afternoon flying kite or just sit on mat and relaxing. You can visit many attractions all around the area such as the national museum. Sanam Luang is also in walking distance to Khao San Rd. and The Chao Phraya River.

The Chao Phraya River is the major river of Thailand, pass through 9 provinces from Nakhon Sawan, the province in lower part of northern region, to central region, pass through Bangkok, and end at gulf of Thailand, approximately distance 360 km. I always like to travel by boat, its always enjoyable thing to do. I like to see life along the riverside, its so real Thai life. The long river pass through many provinces, has played a major role in the lifestyles, culture and traditions of the people along it. You can feel it by yourself, just making a trip along the Chao Phraya River or even along canals. In day time, a trip can be made with small long-tail boat to visit canals where you can see typical and life-style of the people with water way along the canals. The old way of living in the past, people depended mostly upon river and canals transportation. Nowadays, the most transportation people use is by roads, but canals are still used. Beside those, you will see typical old houses, temples, and the way people buy and sell things. In the evening you can make a special dinner on the river cruise and enjoy the view of Bangkok at night.

Many times we travel pass this place as it is located in the middle of a traffic roundabout on Ratchadamnon Road. This place reminds our moment of first constitution. The Democracy Monument was constructed in 1932 to commemorate thailand's first constitution. Its a signalling a change of government from absolute monarchy to democracy with the king as head of state. Finally I got a chance to stop by there by the night of Songkran festival, this place was central spot of the festival, decorated with light, fountain and colourful dragons, so beautiful !!! (more photos at my travelogue)

In Songkran Festival or Water festival, a New Year time for all Thai people, take place every year on 13-15 of April. We have all activities about water. In last few years Bangkok try to promote this festival in bangkok because normally people go to join this festival in other provinces such as Chiang mai..etc. I join this festival every year and lately become a normal events for me so in a last couple of years in the festival, I join this event in Bangkok. I went to Ratchadamnon Road at night where all the way of the road was decorated. There were a dancing colorful fountain in the middle of the road, but the high light was at Democracy Monument where all around the place was decorated. Also nearby there was a thai performance present to visitors in the open area beside the road. (more photos at my travelogue.)

If you happen to stay in Khao san Rd. here this place you can come for relaxing. At Phra Athit Rd, there's a nice park with nice Thai Parvillion and Phra Sumeru Fort located. It's the largest existing fortress of all 14 which now only two exist, built in the reign of King Rama I. Nearby, is a public park call Suan Santichaiparkran provide great view of The Chao Phraya river. You can visit there for relaxing in nice relaxing atmosphere, watching sunset over the river, nice scene of the newest bridge RAMA VIII and take a look at some activities of visitors there. All around the area along Phra Athit Rd. there's many nice small restuarants, decorated in style, very relaxing area.
