Carennac, The Most Beautiful Village Carennac holds the recognition as being one of the most beautiful villages in France and the title is well deserved. Carennac sits on the banks of the Dordogne River and the town is surrounded by lush vegetation. To enter the town you must cross a molt like bridge. Only one car at a time can enter the town. It is a wise person who chooses to park on the outside of town and walk in.
The town's history dates back to Neolithic times even though it has been destroyed in various wars. The 100 year war and the religious war were particularly hard on the town. It was painstakingly rebuilt in the 15th Century. The town is only 20km from the town of Rocamadour. |

hquittner Sat Apr 25, 2009 20:52 UTC We visited Carennac 15 years ago as we hunted down early Romanesque tympani. It seems the rare person who visits the Dordogne is only interested in kayaking. |
