The Lonaian Greeks founded Ephesus in the 11th century BC. Ephesus was originally located on the sea and was a major port. As the port silted up in the 6th century it was moved to what is now Selcuk. Today Ephesus is 5 km from the sea.
The Romans turned the city into a Christian City after a long conflict.
In 15th century Ephesus was was included in the Ottoman Empire.
Street of Kuretes
Ephesus was rediscovered in the late 19th century and archaeology digs have been going on for over a century.

 Hey! Our Turkish tour guide didn't tell us about the gladiator vs. wild beast fights at Ephesus! Maybe she thought we were some crazy animal rights activists or something. You've got some great photos here!
