Guatemala is, I think, the most spectacularly beautiful country in Central America. It probably ranks in the top ten or twenty in the world, for that matter. The Highlands are rough, forested, and inhabited mostly by Indians, most of whom speak their own Mayan-based language and have but limited control over Spanish, the nominal official language of the country. In recent years, this has been a very unhappy, dangerous place. When we were there -- 1977 and 1979 -- it was a peaceful, laid-back haven from the hurly-burly of the West. I now hesitate to return for fear of being disappointed, despite the fact that the political murders have stopped.
