Singapore: The Lion City | Suntec Center on New Year's Eve |
Photo: A crowd of 80,000 celebrated New Year's Eve 2001 in the plaza surrounding Suntec City's Fountain of Wealth.
There wasn't much on the islands that now constitute the State of Singapore, located at the toe-end of the Malay Peninsula, when Sir Stamford Raffles decided to establish a foothold there for the British in 1819. All he found was a little kampong on a mostly swampy island with the rather improbable name of "Lion City", which it had received from a Sumatran prince who had thought he had spotted a lion there. What you will find now, should you go, is a phenomenally successful city-state that looks more like Manhattan than it does any other city in South East Asia - save Hong Kong.
