Wat Traimit -- Bangkok.

This Buddha is solid gold and weighs about 4 tons. Threatened by a Burmese invasion in the 11th or 12th century, monks plastered the statue over to hide it. Their deed was forgotten until, one day in around the early 1950s when the Buddha was moved. During the process, it fell, the plaster cracked, and the gold was revealed!

Just the kind of VT page I enjoy. Extremely intelligently written. Great tip on the Sound & Light Performance at Mae Hong Son. I may well check that out in the near future.
