  • Tip Rating:
  • If you visit no other city in Pakistan, let it be Lahore. The Fort, the market, and the main mosque are all stunning. Karachi, though it is the commercial capital, is a major tourist bust. The Empress Bazaar named for Queen Victoria, Empress of India, is okay as is the beach at Clifton, but there's not much else. The BEST places in Pakistan are all off the beaten track, however, and require some effort to visit.

  • Tip Rating:
  • You must go north to Karimabad, the capital Hunza. It is a storybook place: quiet, laid-back, and splendidly set with a mountain locals call 'Ladyfinger' behind it and Rakaposhi facing it. It is one of the world's most beautiful spots, in my view.

  • Karimabad with Ladyfinger behind (When I was there in 88, this peak had not yet been scaled.)

Karachi: Go to the Empress Market.
  • Tip Rating:
  • This large covered bazaar owes its name to Queen Victoria, and the name has not changed since Partition and the establishment of Pakistan in 1947. This is actually my favorite spot in all of Karachi. And for a first-time visitor to the city, it is certainly a must. Make sure you walk through the spice market if nothing else. The smells alone are captivating.
