Unamerican? This guy must be nuts, right? Well, actually, no. The reason I say this is that Washington has a more European feel to it than just about any other city in the country I can think of. It's low-rise: No buildings may be higher than the Capitol. And it's walkable. Add to it an efficient public transit system, traffic circles (roundabouts), and broad, tree-lined avenues, and it's no surprise that you find yourself reminded much more of Paris or Berlin than of New York or Los Angeles. For those unfamiliar with Washington and US history, the city was the first planned capital in the world. The designer/architect? A Frenchman by the name of Pierre L'Enfant.

Good job on one of my favorite cities. I LOVE that Metro system too. Better than Montreal. Agree w/ you about the VietNam Memorial. So many great sites and so much for free!
