Outside the OLD cloth market place
If you want to buy cloth; silk, cashmere, satin or something completely different, go to DongJiaDu cloth market. There are several dozens of stalls selling all the colours and materials you need to make the curtains in your living room, a suit for your husband or bedclothes to your bed. The whole street is full of cloth shops and stalls but the actual hall of cloth stalls is are near at the ZhongShan Rd and DongJia Du Rd's junction on the left side. UPDATE 24APR 2006 on Shanghai Forum was said that this place has moved to It's 399 Lujiabang Lu. Near the old location.
The shopkeepers speak a little English, but pocket calculator, pen and paper and gestures usually convey the message. There are tailors that can make you the item you want with the material you want by your instructions. A word of warning: check the quality of the tailor in beforehand if possible. Also Check the material every time you buy something.
Stall number 53 had (year 04) had a good tailor (kitchen curtains) but another stall (living room curtains) was not good (patters printed on the cloth did not match in the pair of curtains I bought...so ALWAYS check the quality!)
What to buy: Cloths!
What to pay: Just an example: I paid for a metre of pure silk 55 yuan. Yes, it required a lots of bargaining.
Address: 399 Lujiabang Lu
Directions: Near Nanpu Bridge.

Old Xiang Yang market place
Xiang Yang market place is full of clothes, bags, table clothing etc but do remember to check the quality before buying.
This is a real bargainer's paradise.
I would call the market as a "Fake Market" but hey, one can do really good shopping there.
The New Xiang Yang Market has been relocated The address is :
Shanghai Hong Qiao Datong Tang Building
No. 461 Jin Hui Road
What to buy: There are plenty of things to buy from scarfs to fake handbag's. From souvenirs to jeans.
What to pay: Bargain, bargain bargain - thats my advise. As an extreme example: a girl asked 180yuan for a hairpin (like two fingers to put your hair up) and we ended up paying 4 yuan to her. This was because I had seen similar hairpins in a local groceries for 3 yuan and I told her that.
Address: No. 461 Jin Hui Road
Directions: Ming Hang Area (near Wu Zhong road)

I my opinion there are two main shopping streets in Shanghai. There is Huai Hai road, where one can find almost anything from books, nice lace bra's, shoes to suits etc. This street seemed to me have a lots of brand shops and the prices were quite high compared to other streets.
The other "main" shopping road is most probably Nanjing Lu, which leaves from the Bund and is kilometres long. There you can find shopping malls after shopping malls and also Mc Donalds in every 100 metres (almost!).
Between Nanjing Lu and Huai Hai road is Shanxi road south, there you can find smaller shops selling mostly clothes and shoes. But if you are not in the area, do not bother, but it is worth a promenade if you're around.
But like in every city, it will be cheaper if you wander away from the mainstreets and look for shops in different areas. The road names I just gave are just few shopping streets in Shanghai but perhaps the most popular ones?

Super Brand Mall is HUGE
The biggest (?) shopping mall, Super Brand Mall, in Asia is situated in Shanghai. It is at the Pudong area.
There are a lot of shops but a lot of empty space (Apr 04) as well. It was spotless clean but as it was so huge one easily gets the impression that its almost empty as well. But actually thats not the case.
On the top floor are situated an "entertainments" like cinema, children play-rooms, games etc.
One floor (5th?) is dedicated to food. There you can find f ex sushi and Thai food, pizza and Korean BBQ and coffee shop.
What to buy: Here you can find almost anything; home eletronics, clothes for both women and men, home furnitures, food, leather and bags, jewellery, toys, golf, home deco, hair care & salons... you name it!
Brands like Lacoste, Nike, Samsung, Panasonic, The North Face, Esprit are sold here...
What to pay: depends what you're going to buy...
Address: 168 Lujiazui Xi Lu, Pudong
Directions: Between the river and JinMao tower.
