The tourism industry is one of the major pillars of the economy of Hong Kong. Therefore it is no surprise that Hong Kong Tourism Board has made a brilliant job in informing incoming tourists with great, informative brochures and information desks, which can be found already in arrivals hall at airport as well as downtown (Star Ferry Pier, on Kowloon side) HK. If you have time, before your trip, it is worth to study closely the net pages of Hongkong Tourism Board The pages will give you an idea of HK. I will share what I learned from my first, but not the last, trip to HK with you. Hong Kong is divided into four main areas - Kowloon, Hong Kong Island, the New Territories and the Outlying Islands. Kowloon and the New Territories are on a peninsula of the Chinese mainland. Hong Kong Island is on the southern side, facing Kowloon. The Outlying Islands simply refers to any of the more than 200 islands, like Lantau. The city center is the main business district is Central, on Hong Kong Island and Tsim Sha Tsui on Kowloon side. East of Central lies the Admiralty commercial district; Wan Chai, known for restaurants and clubs. The Peak is Hong Kong's premier scenic outlook and residential district, which has plenty of public green space. In Kowloon, Tsim Sha Tsui (on the southern tip), Jordan and Yau Ma Tei are busy hotel and shopping areas, while Mong Kok is a bustling shopping area and where Ladies Night Market is situated. I was asked whether I liked more of Kowloon or HK island. Well, there is a tricky question as I liked them both. HK island is great combination of modern city, a business districts and entertainment and yet HK island is in heart of nature. Kowloon is bustling "original Chinese city, with its markets" and yet it has modern shopping malls and beautiful parks. |
| | Hong Kong stole my heart. Even if it is a million city it has nature and sea near, kind and friendly people, delicious food from all over the world, various shopping possibilities, good & clear public transportation systems, lovely islands!
I felt that it is the most safest city/town I've ever been in. I did not have to hold my bag close to me all the time as in some cities (Milan) and I felt safe on walking on the streets as well. Also I felt OK to take out the map in the middle of crowd and check the directions.
Dress code I had an image in my mind that people in HK dress up to business suits and that the casual clothing is not acceptable. If you are going there for a business trip then you should wear your suit, even when its damn hot but if you're going to holiday it is OK to wear casual clothing. Wear what ever makes you feel confy! Thats my advise. |
HOTELSIf I may give you a piece of advise it would be that book your hotel early as the hotels tend to be fully booked the weekends. I made the mistake that I waited too long before making the reservation (one day before departure) and the hotel I wanted to book was already fully booked. No possibility of changing the hotel (budget limits!) later on the week as hotels get fully booked for the weekends and we were on budget (more than 70EUR/nite too much). Also what it comes to hotel breakfasts: I noticed that they were 8-10 EUR per person, depending on hotel, and not worth the money. Next time I will enjoy my breakfast at Delifrance or in similar place. | | | Breakfast selection at hotel |
