The town of Sagres is a quiet, pleasant fishing port with several attractive and often lively bars. During the summer months, Sagres comes to life as a centre for ‘serious’ surfing, on account of its proximity to some of the best surfing beaches in Europe. In addition to its generally up-beat and genial atmosphere, Sagres, is steeped in mystery, legend and history.
Close by are the dramatic and historic rocky promontories of Cape St Vincent and Cape Sagres, with the bay of Beliche (where we have been -> look at my Algarve traveogue!) lying between them. This is Europe’s most southwesterly point, and up to the end of the 15th century, it was considered, literally, the World’s end. Mariners who were foolhardy enough to sail too far from the Capes towards the West were expected to fall off the edge of the world into an abyss where demonic monsters waited to devour them, ship and all. |
