Symbol of Copenhagen Little Mermaid Review

The mermaid is a symbol of Copenhagen and is always surrounded of tourists at any any time. You can watch her by a long walk in the harbor/warehouse district or (as we did) by a boat trip. In fact she is smaller than I had expected...but: it's the LITTLE mermaid.

The bronze sculpture was created by the sculptor Edward Eriksen (1876 - 1959) and was given to the city of Copenhagen by Carlsberg's famous brewer Carl Jacobsen. You find models and pictures of the sculpture everywhere in Copenhagen.

Tivoli is Denmark's biggest tourist attraction with c. 4 million visitors per year.

Granted, most of these visitors are Danish. And granted, most of the non-Danish visitors are from neighbouring Sweden and thus well acquainted with the attractions and pleasures of the Tivoli Gardens.

Tivoli dates back to 1843, when Denmark was still an absolute monarchy, and Copenhagen was still a fortified city with tall ramparts and a deep moat surrounding the capital. 120,000 people lived within these too tight boundaries. It is no wonder, that Tivoli gained instant success when the magic gardens opened its gates to a world of exotic designs and elegant entertainment.
