Yonge Street: The Longest Street in the World!?!

There are many well known streets in Toronto with many places to shop or be entertained, but perhaps the best known is Yonge Street (pronounced Young Street). To say the least, it is a lively, industrious, busy, interesting, and a "do not miss" location for your visit to Toronto! It has the reputation of being the longest street in the world and as traffic is usually quite busy, it is best to know where you need to access it.
Every kind of goods, services, food, drink, & entertainment seem to be in abundance here! It is lively, but not rowdy. It has a certain edge to it, but does not seem to threaten. A stroll down Yonge Street is an introduction to the many cultures and nationalities that become Toronto. All seem to coexist in a polite respect and all are represented with places to shop, eat, drink, and socialize! From driving what seemed to have been the length of the longest street in the world, I think I can safely say that whatever you are looking for is looking back at you here!
The pictures posted are a view of Yonge from several views, but certainly not inclusive of all as these pictures are gathered from my 3 or 4 block perspective from my hotel. The first picture gives you an idea of the activity and enterprise that happens here. The second one is of some swanky place that I could not afford while the third pic provided an interesting picture of a church. Ok, not like the churches back home, I guess... The last one here was nice for me because of the dark shadows while Sunshine illuminates the sky.
Please check out other tips as many are strategically associated with Yonge Street!

CN Tower: The Eiffel Tower of North America!

If you're in Toronto, have some time, and it's a beautiful day, you really should visit this most memorable landmark. I'm pretty sure it would be worth the visit even if not a beautiful day, but I hope that you are as fortunate as I in having a clear, sunny day to enjoy the views afforded you here!
I have a 360 degree view from the CN Tower in a travelogue on this page, so I won't try to duplicate the pictures here. But, I really enjoyed this place and must say that it was one of the highlights of my Toronto visit! There are many interactive displays and movies that tell you of the building and history of the CN Tower. To me, I was most interested in the view which was dramatic in every direction.
There are a couple of options and levels for you to choose. The first and largest is the Lookout Level and you are whisked upward in an elevator moving along the exterior of The Tower from all sides at a speed of about 20 mph. It takes less than a minute to reach the Lookout Level height of 1136 feet or nearly 350 meters and all the while you are seeing the sprawling view below you! There are restaurants, movies, a 360 degreee area for viewing inside as well as a level that is on the outside so you can feel the wind and coolness at this height.
An interior elevator will take you another 100 meters upward to the Sky Pod. Since you've come this far, I would highly recommend that you ascend to this level as it allows you to look more downward and see all around. The cost varies depending upon which level you choose. There are three costs which I believe to be around $23 (Cdn) for the Lookout Level, $27 for the Sky Pod Level, and one additional $32 charge that allows you access to some interactive displays and the cinema.
Even if you are not the commercial tourist type, swallow your pride and visit the CN Tower for a view you will never forget!

This is the Rogers Centre/Skydome located just next to the CN Tower and is the place for many sporting events, concerts, and other activities. I was surprised at just how close it is the the CN Tower. Literally, if you walk outside the Tower, you are at the Rogers Centre! A strange footnote of little consequence... I used to work for a fiber optic cable manufacturer and Rogers Cable was one of my accounts. Isn't that interesting??? Ok, go back to sleep...

Ok, let me set this straight... I love artwork just as much as the next person and especially the expressive style that allows one to interpret as their eyes see it. But I have to wonder what symbolism the artwork in front of the Air Canada Centre is supposed to represent. Perhaps I'm thinking of it from a marketing perspective or maybe as "naming rights" go, it was there before (don't get me started on naming rights.... @^&*#%~!). I'm sure some Torontotonian (what DO you call someone from Toronto?) like CdnJane can explain...
Anyhoo, my point is this... the twisted steel artwork in front of the center reminds me of the remnants of an airplane crash and I wonder how this benefits Canada Air? Let it be known that I have a weird eye and even more weird sense of humor, but this was my very thought as soon as I saw it! I couldn't believe it! Gasp! What do you think? Agree? Disagree? Yankee go Home?

Within easy walking distance of the CN Tower, you will also find a micro-brewery, more artful renderings, and a refreshing pool with metal dolphins! The point is, when time allows... Explore! See more than the obvious!

I think it's pretty safe to say that in the midst of modern, towering buildings the Flatiron Building is a refreshing look to the past. It certainly is unique in its appearance and is also unique for the land that it occupies. Built in the 1800's, it is reported to be the most expensive office space in Toronto. So, naturally, it is at the top of my list for my planned Toronto office. Right! Just check the registry and you'll likely find my "How You Doin'?" Talent Agency! We specialize in Clowns & Idiots and our company philosophy begins at the very top and trickles down, and down, and down...
Enough of self-promotion... If you're in Toronto, you'll likely enjoy the view of this famous Flatiron Building. As a special bonus, there are other neat attractions, restaurants, markets, shops, and scenic sights to behold all in this same area. Stay tuned and you'll learn more about them!

As we walked towards our Saturday morning tour to see the St. Lawrence Market, I happened to catch a glimpse of this stunning church. I had no idea at the time of its name and even less that I would be much closer as a part of the "Toronto Treasure Trove". And so, I took this first picture and found myself closer the next day to complete this grouping of pictures. I did not get to go inside or even photograph it more closely, but I hope you will see some reason to appreciate the architecture of this House of Worship.

When Ryan (VT Member RSRaz) suggested a group of us visiting VT'ers might enjoy a trip to the St. Lawrence Market, boy was he right! Not only is the St. Lawrence Market near and in the midst of many other interesting destinations, but what an eye-opening experience for me, and I didn't get to see all!
In the short time we had here (45 minutes) my head was pulled in so many directions and my camera could not keep up with my eyes, but I tried my best to give you some flavor of the place and hopefully a greater incentive to make this a destination when in Toronto. You don't have to buy anything (I didn't), you can simply enjoy the diversity, color, and pagentry of a well-done market that works in many ways.
In this group of pictures you will see the exterior of this bustling market and that's not bad either! There is also a downstairs level to the main building and an annex across the street. I did not have time to visit the lower level, but I hope if you come here, you will and take pictures so that I can see what I missed! I won't miss it the next time, I promise!
I do have pictures of both the inside and outside of the annex across the street, so come along with me and enjoy the sights, smells, sounds, and sensations of the St. Lawrence Market!

If the visual stimulation of the many fresh vegetables & fruits displayed and available here can't convince you to embrace a healthy lifestyle, then I'm worried about you! I must admit that though I'm a "country boy" there were a few selections here that I was not familiar with, but would certainly be willing to try!
This selection of pictures were all taken in the Annex of the Market across the street from the previous ones, with the exception of the fruit pic taken inside the main building. There are exterior pictures of the Annex later, but for now just stroll with me and make your selections for the dinner we will prepare together... Ummm!

Now that we have chosen our vegetables, we need something to build them around. I can't imagine that whatever your taste and desire for a main course that it is not readily available here! While you're at it, why not pick up some ham, brats, and more that we can use for our "carry out" lunches next week? And, the cheese looks good too!
Do I look fat in these jeans, Dear? They've become quite restrictive of late. Have you washed them in really hot water? I could swear they've gotten smaller!

Yves76 Tue May 6, 2008 02:28 UTC the artwork in front of the Air Canada Centre is actually to be seen at night when it's lit up. When lit from the inside, it looks like stars (as cut out from the iron sculpture).
