The Grateful Dead... "What a long, strange trip it's been!"
Well... Well... Well... So finally, here we are! Thanks to those who tried to identify the place I so foolishly failed to note, and very special thanks to VT Member Labeep, my dear friend Isabella for her time and diligence to answer that which has been a puzzling question for several years. Thanks, Isa! :-)
At last, I can share with you both the most memorable and most forgettable accomodations I've ever experienced! Later, I will also provide you with the website address for this beautiful and historical place, so read further!
I hope you won't mind and I hope it's acceptable to offer you both the discovered version of this place, and the undiscovered version so that you will have both perspectives. I would like to offer some history of the Abbaye, pictures and relevant information for your use "borrowed" from their website. I would also like to include my orginal travelogue and my own pictures as well just in case you don't believe that I was there! :-) I happen to think that different perspectives can be very helpful and I hope that this will also be your feelings as you take this virtual tour. So, come along with me as we travel back in time and just imagine yourself in this place... the Abbaye des Vaulx de Cernay!
The compound consists of 3 places of accommodation... The Abbaye, Les Haras, and La Ferme. The Abbaye is definately the most luxurious of the three and I had the priviledge to reside there on the last night of our stay as you will see in my travel tips. The first night was spent in Les Haras and though nice, was suffocatingly small. Both will be represented here for your viewing pleasure!
The Abbaye des Vaulx de Cernay was founded in 1118 by cistercian monks arriving from the Abbaye of Savigny. The Abbaye existed as a working place of religion and was largely self-supporting until the 15th century when it was abandoned after the 100 Year War. There were attempts to restore and revive the Abbaye during the 16th century but was eventually sold in 1791 oddly corresponding with the French Revolution.
In 1873 the Abbaye and its 7500 acre reserve was purchased by the Baronne Nathaniel de Rothschild and the restoration was continued. It remained in the Rothschild name until 1945, again mysteriously (to me) corresponding to the end of WW II when it was purchased and used as a research center by a company who manufactured planes and continued in this capacity for approximately 30 years.
In 1988 it was purchased and transformed into its present form and will hopefully continue for many years to come! The sandstone structures, the scenic beauty of the surrounding forest, and the quiet peaceful setting all combine to make this a destination to be remembered!
