The Splendor of the German Alps

Week-end Trip... Wish I had more time!

Dramatic Scenery
This was a short week-end trip taken long ago when I was in the army stationed in Heidelberg. My friend, Paul Irvin and I decided to take this trip and try our hand (or more, our legs!) skiing!

At that time, parts of Berchtesgaden were used as an R&R (Rest & Relaxation or Recuperation... I forget which) place for U.S. servicemen and their families and you could go there and stay very inexpensively.

So, here we are on our way! The train ride from Heidelberg took us through Stuttgart and Munich and into the Bavarian region of Germany. It was a fairly lengthy train ride as I remember... 7 or 8 hours, but worth the trip! I have more pictures on slides and just found out that there is a scanner available that will do this (thanks to Paul, VT member ExParisGuy) for sharing this infomation... Now, I just need him to send me the money to afford it! ;-) Until then, I hope you will enjoy my few pictures and memories....

Pros:"Breath-Taking views... We don't have mountains like this in North Carolina!"
Cons:"As usual... didn't have enough time here!"
In A Nutshell:"I have fond memories and a desire to visit again..."

Hotel General Walker has been destroyed. I spent a wonderful couple days there following Desert Storm. It was turned back to the Germans in '95 and left to rot. I went to look at it in '98 and it had pretty much been looted. It was torn down in 2000.
