I have found that tipping in New York is very customary. Its normal for every drink you buy, to leave a $1 for the person that served you. I know that in the UK its not very common to leave tips at the bar (every attempt I have made, the money was given back to me), but remember to leave a tip after you have bought a drink or you might get frowned upon.
