Getting TO/AROUND: The Subway is the fastest and most reliable way to get around New York, especially during weekdays when the traffic gets quite congested then the subway is the best option.
My personal views of the subway are not very good. I have used many subways in different cites around the world and in my opinion New York's is the worst.
Compared to subways in cities line London, Paris, Hong Kong and Madrid, the New York subway is the worst I have ever experienced.

The signage is absolutely terrible and its very easy to get lost, make sure you get a free map from the ticket office, and if you are unsure of where you are going, please ask someone to help you, as I got lost several times and going in the wrong direction.
Whilst inside the train, you have no idea where you are going as the direction the train is going in is not indicated on all trains, some they do, but on others nothing is shown, and then secondly, the drivers speak so fast you cannot hear what they are saying.

I did not find the trains very regular, and the stations are just plain nasty looking with lots of homeless people that have made it their home. I have no idea why they have not done anything about the appearance of the stations or the fact that all stations have many beggars and homeless.
Another thing is that on street level the Subways are not indicated very well. Whilst looking for a subway you will actually walk past it without realising, its actually there, as they are not indicated very well.
I must sound like a real old moaner now, but the subway was the part of my holiday that I did not like about New York, the rest was great, but the subway in my opinion is just terrible!

One good thing I will say is that it does run 24 hours a day and its quite cheap to use. A 7 day unlimited travel card only cost me $24, which is a steal.

    Taxis: Yellow Cabs

Getting TO/AROUND: Taxi's in New York are ALL OVER. You will never not see a taxi on the streets... Except, when you really need to use one, they they are all not anywhere to bee see, or they are taken, fortunately I did not have any problems with the taxi's I used.

Upon arrival at JFK, I got a cab over to my friends house and I was unsure if her apartment was east or west, so the cabbie kindly offered me his phone so I could get clarification on her address... very helpful indeed.

The initial charge is $2,50 and then 30c after that for every additional quarter mile.
I was always told that the taxi driver sin New York crazy drivers and I never believed anyone when they told me this.. but take my word... its a white knuckle ride, they drive like maniacs, if there is not a traffic jam... they only know one speed... FULL SPEED...oh and they LOVE hooting... dont ask me why, but they love hooting.
