Hero In Your Own Hometown | Historic and modern buildings very close together |
After living and travelling in Guatemala, Belize and Mexico for more than a year, I came back to Germany at the beginning of march '06. Of course I know my hometown quite good, the more I am currently enjoying a lot re-discovering it after such a long time away. So ... these days I am making a whole lot of walks through the city to see all the famous sights and the beautiful city again, but also to show it to the guests we are hosting from Couchsurfing. On those walks we don't only re-visit places I haven't seen since my departure from Germany, but I also get to know it better than I have ever before.
After all I have to admit, that many many times I felt (and suppose will feel alike in the future) myself a little uncomfortable here, in autumn when there is a lot of rain, summer times is over and winter not yet here, not much going on in town, then I consider it in deed a sleepy capital of Nowhere-landia. But then again ... after leaving the city for a hiking trip in the surroundings it is always great to come back home.

1000 Years Of History - Nuernberg then ... By freeing the slave Sigena, documented by the emperor Heinrich III., the story of the city of "nourenberc" (rocky mountain) begins in the year 1050 AC. Trading with locations from further away and handicraft built the basis of the uprising Nuremberg, which favoured the extension of the city, charitable donations and a generous urban life made possible, from which also the arts profited. Karl IV. partially was in the city for months. With the so called "Goldene Bulle" of 1356 he confirmed that each elected German king should hold his first realm day in Nuernberg. |

... and now The city of Nuernberg, as you might already have discovered or probably will sooner or later, to me seems like a small town, compared to cities like New York, Rome or ... Mexico. What I like about it is, that although it seems sometimes a little provincial maybe, at the same time one can call it global. We have international sport events in town as well as music festivals, art exhibitions and museums of great importance for the world, such as the Dokumentationszentrum, Germany as well as for it's people. Nuernberg is a great destination for shopping, there are really exclusive shops to be found in the Kaiserstrasse for example, but at the same time it takes very short only to leave the city and drop into some hiking, cycling or maybe canoening adventures. |

| Pros: | "Capital of the province" | | Cons: | "Compared to Mexico little too little" | | In A Nutshell: | "Nürnberg is a little big city ;-)" |
