Welcome to Števerjan-San Floriano! | Steverjans wineyards & village church |
Dear VT-friends and visitors! I'm a VT-member since 2004 but only now I've finally find the time to build my home page. Anyway I can't do it all at one go, but bit by bit, so please be patient…
Števerjan-San Floriano del Collio is the place where I live since I was born. It's a small village (850 inhabitants) in northeast Italy in the Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia. It lies 6 km from Gorizia (Gorica) and borders Slovenia. (See my "San Floriano del Collio travel pages" for more infos) |
| The mountains you see are already in Slovenia! |
| | Why two names? The first name, "Števerjan", is slovene, the second one is its italian translation. Števerjan, like many other places in the provinces of Gorizia, Trieste and Udine, is populated by the slovene minority. This has its own schools, public bodies and several cultural and sports associations. Growing up as a bilingual person, as part of a national minority, is not always easy, but (among other things) makes one more opened towards foreign languages and cultures. Maybe that's why I love travelling and getting to know foreign worlds more than anything else! |
There's no place like home… If you think of the world as an enormous ocean, Števerjan is just a small drop of water in this big ocean. But, you know, there's no place like home… So, my village may be so small and unkonown, but, of all the places around the world I have seen, I love no other as much as my beloved Števerjan! I hope you'll get to love it a little bit too by seeing my pictures or - even better! - by visiting it. | | | Village church in the sunset |

| | Land of wine & cherries When you enter the village, you can see a signboard where it is written: "Welcome to Števerjan, land of wine and cherries." In fact, Števerjan is well known because of its wine production: in the village there are a lot of wineries which produce an eccellent wine (many say, the best of the region). Besides the vineyards there are also cherry trees, but once they were far more in number. The selling of cherries, which was in the past one of the principal sources of income for Števerjans inhabitants, has in the last decades been supplanted by wine selling. |
Winter fairy tale In Števerjan (276 m altitude) nowadays it doesen't snow so much as it used to in the past. But when it comes to it, the result is a fairy-tale-landscape... | | |
