"The End of the Wall" Shanhaiguan by chewy3326

Where the Wall meets the Sea

Literally, it means, "Mountain Sea Pass," and it truly is. Shanhaiguan is where the Great Wall of China makes its final descent from sharp mountain peaks to the murky waters of the Bohai. This was once a stronghold of China. However, that's no longer visible: today, this pass is overrun by concesion stands, commericalism and tourists. It looks more like a carnival than a five-hundred year old treasure. Also, everything is immensely crowded (especially LaoLongTou).

The next time I visit China (which I inevitably will), this won't be on my list of top places to go. However, I still do want to visit a section of wild wall, particularly sections near Beijing, like Jinshanling. I don't know yet, but I think that'd be a better use of money and time.

Great Shanhaiguan Wall tips! It's tough to escape the crowds, unless you go when it's really freezing cold but then you don't get the pretty blue sky photos.
