Lake of the Sky

Lake Tahoe from Cave Rock
Lake Tahoe was a very beautiful place, but didn't live up to my expectations (maybe I set them too high). For one thing, the town of South Lake Tahoe, to say the least, is hell. Despite the fact that Lake Tahoe is a sensitive environment, South Lake Tahoe is filled with roadside motels, shopping centers, golf courses, and across the stateline, casinos. This means that not everyone visiting Lake Tahoe is here for the scenery and also means that some undesireable people (my own opinion) are attracted here.

Another thing I hate about South Lake Tahoe are the crowds, which easily equal the crowds in Yosemite National Park.
Eagle Lake, Desolation Wilderness
But as I later found out, there's much more to Lake Tahoe than just south Lake Tahoe; a much more worthwhile place to spend your time is the beautiful lake-dotted Desolation Wilderness, which, despite being the most visited per-acre wilderness in the United States, is still undeniably spectacular.

Great photos from your hikes, which is something we didn't get to do on our winter visits. Aim for the north side if you get back here. Far less crowds and better scenery. The hotel experience sounds like a horrible ordeal.
