Nantou County is the only landlocked county in Taiwan. It is sparsely populated and has mountains more rugged than any other part of the island. Tens of peaks soar above 3000 meters here, including Yushan, the tallest mountain in Northeast Asia, at the southern border of the county. No where else in Taiwan can you see scenery as alpine and spectacular as Nantou.

Nantou is what lets Taiwan remain Ilha Formosa. Deep, green forests, lush alpine meadows, soaring peaks, jagged crests; Nantou is unique. No visit to Taiwan would be complete without walking the trails of the many nature reserves and two national parks here. However, as more and more locals begin driving, the mountains are slowly becoming crowded. You probably won't be the only person wanting to escape the smoggy cities. Come up for some air, and hike the mountains.
