The pool out back
I didn't stay here but I know the owners and have visited. It is one of the nicest hostels I have ever seen! When I visited the hostel had organized it so that a bunch of the people staying there could go to Maracana together. It's very social, close to the beach, and beautiful.
Unique Qualities: Has a pool, cool rooms, a big kitchen, serves a good breakfast (I did eat there), is very social, has multi-lingual people working there (big plus), can organize any outing for you! The owners are also very social in Rio and know all the best places to go! there is no curfew, a BBQ, airport pick up, and the list goes on. It's more like a hotel with dorm rooms!
Address: Rua Barao da Torre, 485
Comparison: about average
Directions: Ipanema
Price: US$20-40

The bar/social area
My friend stayed here and really liked it. He left Rio and came back only to go back to this hostel. This hostel is also very social with a bar of it's own. I met up with him there for a beer and met a ton of people. The people who work there are also fairly helpful and there is no curfew
Unique Qualities: free breakfast, Internet, lockers, kitchen, bar, close to everything in Copacabana, common room
Address: Av. Santa Clara 304
Comparison: less expensive than average
Price: less than US$20

The hotel is great. It really is. It's beautiful and expensive... The thing is that it's in Barra. My friend came to visit me and had miles she could use for a free night in the Barra Sheraton so we did (I've been living here, in Laranjeiras, for almost a year). You know, it's far from everything except the beach and stuff in Barra. You have to take a cab everywhere but the beach. This is NOT the best location as people are saying... unless you want to spend half your money on taxis. It's not too much but R$35 or so to get into Ipanema will start adding up. It's a great place if you don't mind not really seeing Rio or experiences how things really are. Barra is nice but a different place. It's not Rio, it's Barra.
Unique Qualities: Pool, bar, great view, comfy bed! Nice hotel. Keep in mind that the Capirinhas are about R$13 each.
Address: AVENIDA LUCIO COSTA 3150, Rio De Janeiro, NO 22630
Comparison: more expensive than average
Price: US$120-180

Here are 2 sites for finding a place in Rio and other cities in Brazil. You will find the cheaper places looking in the newspaper (if you speak Portuguese and can get around it) but these aren't too bad.

Very cool clean place. The neighborhood is in a cool area. Santa Teresa is a bit out of the way when it comes to the rest of the area but it's still fun to hang out in. Great for those more interested in getting to know locals over getting to know the beach.
Unique Qualities: TV LOUNGE - nice area to relax, read a magazine, go through some tourism books and watch TV
SWIMMING POOL - nice pool with fountain that will invite you for a “caipirinha” (brazilian drink) by the bar and hammocks perfect for an outside rest
BARBECUE - open space to cook your own barbecue
BEDROOMS WITH NICE VIEW - all the bedrooms have a nice view of downtown and fresh air coming in
INTERNET FACILITY - access to internet (with costs)
GAMES - some table games available for the leisure time
INDIVIDUAL LOCKERS - individual lockers with keys
SELF CATERING KITCHEN - kitchen open for cooking from 12pm until 10pm
CREDIT CARD - accept the following credit cards: Visa, American Express, Master Card and Diners (minimum of two nights)
Address: Rua Japquim Murtinho
Comparison: less expensive than average
Directions: In Santa Teresa
Phone: 3852-0827
Price: less than US$20
