Aloha!!!

by lkdahl - last update: Nov 30, 2004

I was forturnate enough to spend almost a year in Hawaii to attend the University of Hawaii in 1990. Coming from Minnesota where winter lasts almost 6 months to a place where the temperature rarely drops below 80 degrees F was a welcomed change.

The best time to go to Hawaii is early fall and late spring. In the summer it's very hot and very humid. In the winter months the weather can be unpredictable. Some months it seemed it was either cloudy or rained EVERY day. The winter months are also the high season, so prices will reflect that.

Waikiki is the main tourist area. It is always bustling with activity, 24 hours, seven days a week. Hotels and apartments are extremely high priced, especially when they are located on or near the beach. For better deals on accomadations look for hotels that are farther from the beach(maybe 4 blocks or more). A little walk isn't going to hurt you. Besides you are in paradise!

As I noted I attended the University of Hawaii in Manoa. Trying to attend school and keep up with your studies was very difficult if not impossible. Especially when you are coming from a place that is as vastly different as Minnesota is. Let's just say I spent WAY too much time going to the beaches. LOL

Waikiki Beach

Main tourists area. Everyday you will see tens of thousands of tourist from all over the world.

Hang Loose!

Surfing is an institution in Hawaii. This wave is considered small by Hawaiian standards. The largest waves can be 50 feet high along the North Shore of Oahu.

Can there ever be too much time spent on beaches? I bet you still got good grades though.

Aloha Luke. Thanks for your note. Nice pics on your Hawaii site. Glad you enjoyed your one year stay in the islands. I graduated from the University of Hawaii (Dec 89) a little before you started. Take care and happy travels. Aloha, Randy
