Ljubljana is a microcosm for the rest of the country. Not that it resembles the rest of the country in culture or vistas, but in that its people are warm and life appears to revolve around socializing. Wine, food and conversation. It is different than most capital cities. There are not many museums or traditionally "beautiful" buildings or higher end shopping. But here is the charm. One has more time to spend outdoors walking through a park or sitting along side the river at a cafe or shopping at an outdoor market. The river cuts through the main part of the center and serves as a magnet for people and places. All types of music vibrates through the air. The buildings contrast from a dull grey to a brillant pastel. Ljubljana is what a European city should be, more untouched by tourists, a little rough around the edges, but teaming with life.
It is an easy city to navigate and explore. One can spend a few days here and see the main sites. Almost everyone speaks English. A 20 or 30 minute walk in any direction from the city center will put one at most of the sites. While I only spent a few days here, If Slovenia is the country I wou\ild love to live in, than Ljubljana is the city. |
| | Ljubljana appears to be a city where people live. A majority of the products made in the country come from here. There is a university. Unlike many cities, tourism does not appear to be the driving force, but is well supported. Unlike many other cities, one can sit in a center cafe and have affordable meals and free entertainment. Ljublana is the center hub for venturing out to the rest of the country |
